Cerebral palsy is a condition that involves a group of nervous disorders and injuries in the brain due to which system functions like movement, seeing, hearing, thinking and learning are affected. Sadly, there is no permanent cure for this condition and treatment can be done only to help a person become as independent as possible.
The intensity of the condition can lead to various types of CP. Depending on the type, the symptoms vary which in turn has a different treatment. Treatment for cerebral palsy requires a team approach. This is important because a child will be suffering from several disorders that will require lots of help. For this reason, a team of a primary care physician, dentist, social worker, nurses, occupational, physical and speech therapists, and other specialists like neurologist, rehabilitation physician, pulmonologist and gastroenterologist are required.
Treatment for CP will depend on the symptoms that a person exhibits. These conditions should be controlled so that there are no further complications. When the child is at home, self and home care measures should be taken which includes giving the person enough food and nutrition to keep them healthy, keeping the home safe from harm, practicing proper bowel care with the help of stool softeners, fluids, fiber , laxatives and regular bowels habits, protecting the person's joints from injury and performing cerebral palsy exercises recommended by the health care providers.
Although a child is suffering from cerebral palsy, it is recommended that you send him / her to regular schools without the child sufferers from physical or mental disabilities. Special education and schooling will be recommended in this case. When children need help with communication and hearing, then they will need assistance with glasses, hearing aids, muscle and bone braces, walking aids and wheelchairs.
For children to help with their daily activities and care, treatments such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and orthopedic help will be required. Medications for this will include anticonvulsants to prevent and reduce the frequency of seizures, botulinum toxin to help reduce drooling and spasticity, and muscle relaxants like baclofen to reduce tremors and spasticity.
Sometimes, surgeries may help people with cerebral palsy in cases like controlling gastroesophageal reflux; to help pain and spasticity, certain nerves from the spinal cord will be cut; feeding tubes might have to be placed and joint contractures should be released.
Cerebral palsy exercises form a prime part in the life of a person suffering from this condition. Since the main cause of cerebral palsy is the damage of muscle tone, measures have to be taken to increase its strength and functions. This is the goal of cerebral palsy fitness training! Exercises help increase flexibility and mobility of muscles. Additionally, they even increase muscle strength and muscle tone which is very important in treating cerebral palsy. Beside, it keeps the structure of the bone intact and improves bone strength.
CP is a lifelong disorder with no cure which means long term care for the child is very essential. Depending on the amount of disability, a person will need to decide where he / she wants to stay. However, many adults are able to live independently in a community and only sever cases require the person to be placed in an institution.
